We are dedicated to staff training & support the obtainment of qualifications. GSU roles are designed to provide you with a number of opportunities to progress, learn new skills, and take on additional responsibility.  These are our roles:

Landscaping Operative (Level 1 - Age 18-21)
  • The entry-level role, no prior experience necessary
  • Arrives on time for work every day
  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Holds or is working towards a CSCS card
Landscaping Operative (Level 1 - Age 21 & above)
  • The entry-level role, no prior experience necessary
  • Arrives on time for work every day
  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Holds or is working towards a CSCS card
Landscaping Operative (Level 2)
  • 3 months experience in the role
  • Demonstrated sustained good attendance over prior 3 months
  • Arrives on time for work every day
  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Holds a current CSCS card
  • Able to use allocated machinery, i.e. mower, strimmer, rotavator
  • Able to deliver basic tasks required in role independently
Landscaping Operative (Level 3)
  • 6 months experience in the role
  • Demonstrated sustained good attendance over prior 6 months
  • Arrives on time for work every day
  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Holds a current CSCS card
  • Able to use allocated machinery, i.e. mower, strimmer, rotavator
  • Able to deliver basic tasks required in role independently
  • Able to load and unload the vehicle safely and securely
  • Able to prepare ground for turfing in all conditions
  • Able to independently lay 120m of turf per day
Team Leader (Level 1)
  • Able to operate as a Skilled Landscaping Operative and ready for development into a leadership position
  • Demonstrated sustained good attendance over prior 6 months
  • Able to support a Team Leader or Senior Team Leader, undertaking delegated tasks such as getting customer satisfaction notes signed, overseeing the work of operatives, and delegating tasks to your team
  • Takes responsibility for maintaining machinery, e.g. washing off and oil checks
  • Holds a current CSCS card
  • Holds a current driving licence or is actively seeking one
  • Demonstrates role model standards of behaviour
Team Leader (Level 2)
  • Able to fulfil the expectations of a Trainee Team Leader and ready to operate independently in a leadership position
  • Demonstrated sustained good attendance over prior 6 months
  • Able to read and implement drawings
  • Able to sign tickets and complete driver’s / vehicle sheets
  • Ensures machinery and vehicles are properly maintained and kept clean at all times, e.g. washing off and oil checks
  • Undertakes work as instructed by their manager
  • Holds a current CSCS card
  • Holds a current driving licence
  • Holds relevant machinery certificates and licences for role e.g. Tractor / Forklift / Trailer / Spraying / Health & Safety / First Aid
  • Demonstrates role model standards of behaviour
Team Leader (Level 3)
  • Experienced in a Team Leader position, and able to evidence all expectations of the Team Leader role
  • Ready for higher-level leadership role managing multiple teams or bigger jobs, and taking on delegated tasks from Managers
  • Demonstrated sustained good attendance over prior 6 months
  • Holds a current CSCS card
  • Holds a current driving licence
  • Holds relevant machinery certificates and licences for role e.g. Tractor / Forklift / Trailer / Spraying / Health & Safety / First Aid
  • Demonstrates role model standards of behaviour

In order to progress to a higher-level operative role, you must have achieved all expectations within your current position.  To progress to a leadership position, you must be operating as a fully skilled operative, and there must be a vacancy within GSU for the relevant leadership role.
